PDX Playwrights Content Guidelines

Content Guidelines for Productions and Readings

(For a printable copy, please click PDXP Content Guidelines)

PDX Playwrights provides a safe environment for free creative expression from a diversity of voices and viewpoints. In our public productions—which include any and all performances or events produced under the PDX Playwrights name or brand, and our table readings—PDX Playwrights curates its content with a light hand. Nevertheless, we expect all content that we produce to uphold the following values:

  • We encourage the continuous development of plays in an environment that is safe for personal expression.
  • We will not produce content that promotes or glorifies discrimination or discriminating stereotypes.
  • We will not support, condone, or promote hate speech of any kind.
  • We will not produce content that contains gratuitous violence or glorifies violence.
  • We will not produce content that physically or sexually exploits people.
  • We will not produce content used to threaten or organize violence or support violent organizations.
  • We will not produce content that attacks private individuals or violates the rights of individuals.
  • We will not produce content that infringes on anyone’s intellectual property, privacy or other rights.

In productions we oversee, the producer of each show is responsible for and accountable to these guidelines and has the authority to take any appropriate action to ensure compliance, ranging from requiring changes to outright cancellation of a production. In Fertile Ground, the PDX Playwrights Producer in Chief has the final say on whether any production affirms or violates these guidelines. At our table reads, administration team members of the group pre-screen submissions and reserve the right to not schedule or to cancel a play reading at our discretion. We also may choose to offer advisories to audiences when material brought to bear at those gatherings includes content that some may find objectionable. Participants are free to join or leave those gatherings at will without judgment.
